Dating a Woman on Probation

It started with a jello mold
At a cookout in summer
For a few not-so-close friends

Then I wrote her a poem
One I could never reveal
Not an uplifting poem
But one that spoke of her miseries
Trapped for a time
In servitude to substances
Mind-altering and mind-numbing

But that was then
And a few months later
She’s a brand new person
At least to the casual observer
But in my observations
I’m not often casual
So I know better
But choose to set aside that knowledge
For the sake of the hope
Of another date

Our first date was a soup date
Split pea with ham
I ate most of it
Froze the remainder
She didn’t have time that day
To sample our soup
The anklet she wore
Summoned her home
Still in servitude
No longer to substances
For the time being
But still in servitude
To a past she’s still paying for

She brought her baby to the second date
A cute little guy
I spent more time with him than with her
As she baked cheesecake
That I didn’t get to sample
The clock again
Not on our side
The curfew intruded
On what might have been

Maybe we’ll have a little time
The third time around
But more likely
The past predicts the future
And I’ll not sample her dishes
And she’ll not sample mine
As I enter into her servitude
For the hope
Of one more date

Since I Met You

Here’s what I ought do:
Respond to my emails
Rewrite my latest novel
Enter my expenses into QuickBooks
Wash my car
Go to the gym
Write some custom code
Make a few dollars

But, since we talked,
Here’s what I want to do:

Dance in the sunshine
As the clouds part, make way
Write you a fresh poem
Today and every day

Imagine two cups of coffee
Separating us
In a Starbucks in the northwest
While learning
Each color of your eyes

Traveling to the old country
Rome, Paris, Sicily
Tipping the gondolier
As we disembark
Holding hands
In Venice

My mind wanders
My heart flutters
And all that seemed to matter yesterday
Matters not today

Your brave finesse
Your perfect beauty
Your kind heart
Has changed me
Has moved me
To a new understanding
To a new path

Echoes of Reggae

Air and water
Heaven and hell
Sweet Reggae beats
Calming the swell

Stripping the bottles
To the essence of truth
Naked and free
As the rhythms renew

Spin to the right
Again to the left
Steel drum refrains
Ring deep in our heads

A night filled in sweetness
Echoes on through the day
Let’s do it again
We’ll dance, live, and play

Thrill Me Tonight – a song

Thrill Me Tonight – a song

[verse 1]
Walked into the crowded bar
An end to the unending week
I saw your windblown hair
As you walked in from the street

I wondered what might happen
If I asked to know your name
Hoped in that brave moment
We’d never be the same

I’ve always been a dreamer
But the dream was new tonight
I wondered if you’d save my day
And fill my lonesome night

[chorus]
Thrill me tonight
Fill me tonight
Save me from today
Fill my lonely night

Follow me tonight
I’ll show you where you live
Tell to me your name
And thrill me tonight

[verse 2]
The blur of midday ended
As day turned into night
Into your twilight eyes
Into the promised light

I crossed the crowded place
And found your starlit face
Asked you for your name
Into my night you came

I’ve always been a dreamer
But the dream came true tonight
As day turned into evening
Adorned in your beautiful sight

[chorus]

[verse 3]
We drove into the night
Top down, tunes filled the dark
You touched my tired leg
The night lept through my chest

And then began the rest
Of night’s remembered place
Gazing into starlight
Gazing at your face

The tickled insecurities
Faded into dark
As night fell into silence
And all the world fell stark

[chorus]

[verse 4]
Arriving into silence
We fell to life renewed
And life was newly mobile
Moving into grace

The fire turned to light
As colors bloomed to life
I touched your blooming rose
And kissed your waiting face

Perfection found in wonder
Exploring newfound fates
Alive in newfound wonders
Emptying our plates

[chorus]

[verse 5]
Enlivened imprecisions
As day turned into night
We flew to unknown places
Releasing all old plights

And fire turned to night
And water flowed in peace
Releasing you in silence
Screaming in release

Exploding into glory
I touched your waiting place
Started with a moment
I braved to ask your name

[chorus]

The Three Voices

Chaotic dreams of the psychotic darkness
spill into this bright and beautiful new day.
“Why are there so many conflicting thoughts
and desires? Why can’t I make them go away?”

“Peace is in the eternal Mind of God.” I hear
myself with such wisdom and conviction. Yet
another voice, clear and present, also beckons
me thus “I need to be heard. I need to be
loved. I need to be filled. I need to understand.”
These needs, these requests, these demands,
seemingly reasonable and innocent, are the
reason for my lapses of peace.

“Show me the light of true wisdom, Father.”
I hear, unsure, which of the two voices
this time is speaking. Perhaps, on the other
thought, it is another voice. Three voices,
three conflicting sets of wants and needs.
The child needs; the Self knows; the
negotiator tries to make sense of it all.

“The negotiator has the final say. The
negotiator is the home of free will. Choose
well and with much care. Hear the others,
yes, and then, choose well and with
much care.”
