A crowded subway station
Trains arrive from every direction
Non-stops, locals, orange line, blue
Bombarded, overrun is the station

imageThe nightly news
Three people shot
A new strain of a new virus
Contention, disarray, discomfort
A world overrun with thoughts
Begging to be heard

A lifetime of sensations
Images, memories, scents, judgments
Write with squeaky chalk on the blackboard
Speak out of turn and in

All these voices clamor
Join on the crowded platform
The trains arrive, depart, arrive

But behind the veil of chaos’s call
Whispers the quiet child of the heart
The truest truth, the real and flowing beauty
Words of peace, and love

The Death of Poetry

I wonder sometimes if poetry is dead. Replaced by texts and tweets and our proclivity for retreat. We want to be close, but wander instead.

The autumn leaves still change
And breezes still blow
As tuned into the vast blue portals
Short echoes are all we know

Instants of grandeur
Replaced by distractions we carry
Everywhere
We go

Connected to the great and winsome noise
Attracted to the ceaseless din
The world around us fades
As jaded hearts grow dim

But beneath the noise
Under the clamoring, the chaos, the constant distress
We each still breathe
Our hearts, still beat

So while glorious madness refuses defeat
Poetry, while rare, is not yet deceased

Winsome Sliver

Occasionally
A phrase holds on
It rises and rides through the seasons
Filed away, it fills, instills, chills, simmers

Echoes of a slight suggestion
Build in the background of a quiet mind
Until the chaos writhes
And breaks through the winsome din

It was but one simple phrase
Several years left behind
A lone sliver of paper
The words still on my mind

a perfect storm

obscured by the weather
windows, fogged, dim the view
remembering the scene
bright, hopeful thoughts of you

dream through the night
eyes opened in the storm
longing for return
of old days, safe and warm

begging for the grace
heal this weary soul
longing for forgiveness
return to ancient whole

confusion settles in
ever-present friend
prepare for coming blizzard
watchful ’til the end

remembering the moments
when life was plain and blue
doubt and insecurity
painful to review

outside the storm begins
inside storm gains strength
measured life of growth
by breadth and width and length

early memories fill the scene
child of a quiet abode
nowhere to express the soul
to sing the heart’s great ode

to touch, to hug, to feel, to be
rarely known in this dim life
trudging onward drearily
joy unknown, but also strife

sought and found the shallow cures
to keep the heart from feeling real
pushed emotions deep within
as feelings grew, so too, did zeal

walked alone, while in a crowd
darkened room and darkened mind
deeper into evil’s trap
look with fervor, yet never find

to the line and then beyond
raucous mind, losing sound
insanity freed, bound in chains
seeking quiet, chaos found

lost it all to find the truth
to feel, connect, to be, to live
loving creation’s perfect child
release the self and choose to give

outside the winds are gaining strength
but, inside, all is safe and warm
journey of a lifetime lived
remembered in a perfect storm

Illusory Fears

World without form
Existing in dreams
Nothing about us
Is what it seems

Enemy within
Invites me to dance
Loves to take the lead
Never takes a chance

God watches all
From a heavenly room
Fear is much closer
Illusory thoughts consume

All that I think of
Begins where I live
Chaos and misery
Never forgive

Endlessly wander
Controlled by the lost
Never surrender
Regardless of cost

Price of salvation
Drama now release
Seek a new answer
In God we find peace
