Never Stop Walking

There was the slightest sliver of moon that morning as I woke. Not far above the horizon. It seemed I could almost reach up and touch it. The silhouettes of the nearby trees loomed dark on the pre-dawn blue sky. The ground was wet from the slight rains that had visited last night.

As the skies brightened, and the moon faded, I saw the tiny tracks around my small campsite. I sensed that I was being watched by many small eyes. They seemed to appear in the time it took for me to blink. Perhaps it was just my nagging and lagging state of sleepiness. I shook myself awake as I knew I would need to pay close attention to the fast talking mole that led the gathering.

I smiled and stifled a giggle when I heard the leader begin with a clearing of his little throat. He spoke…

Beauty in us all
Unique and rare
Large or small
Look if you dare
Find it in the eyes
Close personal stare

Majesty of life
Precious and dear
Resides in the gaze
Innocent and clear
Open minds and souls
Cherished and near

Compassion is found
In the heart of a child
Experience tamed
Rare in the wild
Kindness and gentleness
Tender, bold and mild

Beauty in us all
Precious and fine
Perfect and tangible
Truly divine
Beyond the close flaws
Cross over the line

Never stop walking
Merging with life
In sickness and health
Love, joy and strife
As child and mother
As husband and wife

Majesty of living
Joined in this day
Holding their hands
Hearing all they say
Graciously loving
Walking the way

In another blink of an eye, they were gone. I still wonder if they were really there. Then I remind myself that it is the message, not the messengers, that really matters…

Waking of the Blue Jay

A blue jay visited me this bright morning
I imagined what his day must be like
From the bird’s eye view
From his perspective
From his perception

Cold breeze pulls at my favored wing
Move it over my eyes to shield me
From both the breeze and the morning light
An instinctual memory
Born very long ago
On the blurred edges of the furthest view

A familiar stiffness in both wings
In an instant, the longing returns
For a return to my home on the winds
Averting my eyes from the sun
I test my wings
Stand tall and spread them wide

A short hop
Then I spread my wings fully
Tilt my head toward the ground
All without obvious thought
My only thought is that I must glide
I must soar toward the clouds up high

Surveying my surroundings quickly
Seeking both food and peril
Ever vigilant
My highest thoughts
Above even the desire to fly
To eat and not be eaten
To continue to live

Finding neither prey nor predator
I look toward the bright sky
Spread my wings wide
Move the feathers without much thought
Knowing the combination that will lift me
I soar toward the heavens

It occurs to me
As I write these words
My needs
Not all that different
From that of the blue jay

To eat
To survive
To soar
To live
To be

The Narrow Path

The path narrowed

Trees reached for the earth

Leaves broadened

My sense of brooding thickened

I took a deep breath of moist green air

Continued on the path

The sage had been clear

Path would be unclear

Yet he urged

I pay little heed

And remember the prize that lay ahead

For centuries it awaited a new soul

Willing to trust the ancient whispers

Longing to grasp the fullness of the treasure

The treasure that glistens and glows

The treasure that is life

The treasure that a man’s heart knows

And so

I blinked a long blink

Took another deep breath

And walked on

Several hours felt like several ages

Feet refused to obey my command

Mind refused to care

I sat for a time to rest

Closed my eyes and slept

I remember being startled

Followed by a moment of great fear

Beast before me was quite large

Covered by many shades of gray

And many browns

I saw very little white

Until I looked at his eyes

There was a wisdom that was unspeakable

And a kindness inexplicable

The timeless light of the great wolf

Shone through his knowing eyes

I asked but one question

“Am I dreaming?”

His response is etched in my mind

My hope is that his words will there forever remain

But in the case that they do not

I write his words here

For all who care to read them

Greetings young one

It is good to see you again

I have waited long for your return

I have waited long to impart this knowledge

I have waited long for you

You have learned that we are one

You have lived the lessons of life

You have loved the teachings of love

You have taught the meaning of forever

And rode the timeless winds of creation

Your lessons will continue

Much hunger you have to learn

No longer must you walk alone

Seeking what others discern

The elders are beside you

In wind and mind and rain

The life you once awakened

Is here where you remain

The dream of life surrounds you

Each moment you are alive

Accept the sacred teachings

And wake when they arrive

Dream the dream of life

Dance the dance of dreams

Wake from hell’s deception

Hear the eerie screams

The screamer screams forever

The lover is always loved

Choose your path and walk it

In this the dawning of

Questions asked and answered

Answers sought and found

No reason left for burdens

Untie what has you bound

Leap and live in love

Take the final plunge

Rise above the miseries

Let the universe expunge

Why are you still dreaming?

Why not just awake?

Peace and love pervade

Let longing not forsake

My expression lightened

His joy twinkled

In the white of knowing eyes

I braved a thin smile

As he turned and walked away

Flowing Life

Looking out my bedroom window
Wondering
Patches of white on the ground
And browns and greens
Sun shines with glory
Lighting the tall strong trees
So many birds in my periphery
As I watch the life flowing around me

Looking into my deepest heart
Wondering
Patches of cold fury emerge
And love and bliss
Son shines with glory
Lighting all who will see
So many angels in my periphery
As I create the life flowing around me

Flowing River, Comforted Land

Water flows through the river of the valley
Twisting and bending and following her form
It knows no other way to exist
Carves her as it flows without end

Deepening of the ancient landscape
Unfamiliar and old and new and changing
Constantly moving toward an unseen place
Nature of existence, dance of water and land

Approaching the great sea, landscape changes
Smoother and wider and calmer, peaceful flow
River and land, land and river, calm bay, warm beach
All is well as  the sun draws the water from the earth

Rains will come again, washing mountains, valley, sea
Be at peace in the perfect knowledge of the great circle
All is precisely as it is supposed to be in this moment
For the waters and the dirt and the rivers and the land
